How Long Does a Spray Tan Really Last? (And 10 Mistakes That Make It Fade Faster)
If you've ever had a spray tan, you've probably wondered:
"How long is this actually supposed to last?"
The answer is different for everyone—but here's what I can tell you after 16+ years as a licensed esthetician.
One of my favorite messages to receive from clients is:
"I'm on day 12 and my tan still looks amazing!"
And honestly... that's exactly what I hope for.
A quality spray tan should never look orange, fade unevenly, or disappear after just a few days. While most professional spray tans last 7–10 days, many of my clients enjoy their glow for 10–14 days because they understand one thing that I talk about all the time...
Healthy, hydrated skin makes all the difference.
People often ask me what solution I use, but the truth is, the solution is only part of the equation. Your skin is what wears the spray tan, so how you care for it before and after your appointment plays a huge role in your final results.
If you want your glow to last as long as possible, here are the 10 biggest mistakes to avoid.
1. Skipping Exfoliation
Think of your skin like a fresh canvas.
Your spray tan develops on the outermost layer of your skin. If that layer is full of dry, dead skin cells, your tan will fade as those cells naturally shed.
Exfoliating the day before your appointment helps create an even surface for your spray tan to develop beautifully.
I always recommend using a spray tan-approved exfoliating mitt and avoiding harsh scrubs that leave behind oils.
2. Arriving With Lotion, Makeup, Perfume, or Deodorant
This is one of the reasons I ask so many consultation questions before every appointment.
Little things matter.
Even products you can't see can create a barrier between your skin and the solution, affecting how evenly your tan develops.
Coming to your appointment with clean, product-free skin gives you the best possible starting point.
3. Forgetting That Hydration Starts Before Your Appointment
If there's one thing I wish every client knew, it's this:
Hydration doesn't start after your spray tan—it starts before it.
Healthy skin holds color better.
When your skin is dry or dehydrated, it sheds more quickly, which means your spray tan fades faster.
I always encourage my clients to stay hydrated, moisturize consistently, and focus on maintaining a healthy skin barrier—not just before a spray tan, but every day.
Your skin will thank you.
4. Rinsing Too Early (Or Too Late)
Every spray tan solution develops differently.
Whether you're getting a Signature Glow, Rapid Tan, or Clear Solution, I'll always tell you exactly when to rinse based on your appointment.
Following those instructions is one of the easiest ways to get the best possible color.
More time doesn't always mean a darker tan, and less time can stop your tan from fully developing.
Trust your artist's instructions.
5. Using the Wrong Body Wash
This is one of the most overlooked reasons a spray tan fades faster than it should.
Many body washes contain sulfates, exfoliating acids, or ingredients that gradually strip away your tan.
Making the switch to a spray tan-safe cleanser can help your glow last noticeably longer.
6. Not Moisturizing Every Day
I can't say this enough.
Hydrated skin equals longer-lasting spray tans.
Daily moisturizing helps keep your skin healthy, supports your skin barrier, and allows your tan to fade naturally instead of becoming dry or patchy.
It's one of the easiest habits you can build—and one of the biggest reasons many of my clients are still glowing nearly two weeks later.
7. Spending Hours in the Pool or Ocean
Living here in Southwest Florida, I know this one isn't always avoidable.
Pools, hot tubs, and salt water can all shorten the life of your spray tan simply because they dry out your skin.
That doesn't mean you have to skip beach days.
Just be sure to rinse off afterward and moisturize to help replace that lost hydration.
8. Sweating Before Your First Rinse
After your appointment, your spray tan needs time to develop.
Heavy sweating before your first rinse can interfere with that process.
Whenever possible, schedule your workout before your appointment or wait until after you've completed your first rinse.
9. Wearing Tight Clothing Right After Your Appointment
Loose clothing isn't just about comfort.
Tight leggings, sports bras, skinny jeans, or anything that rubs against your skin while your tan is developing can affect your results.
I always recommend loose, dark clothing after your appointment so your spray tan has the best chance to develop evenly.
10. Waiting Until Your Tan Is Completely Gone
One thing I've noticed over the years is that clients who love having a natural glow don't wait until every bit of their tan has disappeared before booking again.
Most schedule their appointments every 10–14 days, which helps them maintain a consistent, natural-looking glow year-round.
That's actually what inspired me to create The Glow Club Membership—because glowing skin shouldn't only be reserved for vacations, weddings, or special occasions.
Your Skin Wears the Spray Tan
People often ask me what makes one spray tan last longer than another.
The answer isn't always the solution.
It's your skin.
Healthy skin develops color more evenly, holds onto that color longer, and fades more beautifully.
That's why I spend just as much time educating my clients about exfoliation, hydration, aftercare, and maintaining a healthy skin barrier as I do talking about the spray tan itself.
As a licensed esthetician, I don't believe skincare and spray tanning are separate—they go hand in hand.
The Bottom Line
A professional spray tan should typically last 7–10 days, and with proper prep, daily hydration, and the right aftercare, many people can enjoy their glow for 10–14 days.
My goal has never been to give you the darkest spray tan possible.
My goal is to give you a customized, natural-looking glow that complements your skin tone, fades beautifully, and leaves people wondering if you just got back from vacation.
When clients message me nearly two weeks later saying they're still getting compliments on their tan, that's the best review I could ask for.
