If I had a dollar for every time someone asked me for my "darkest solution," I'd probably be writing this from a beach somewhere.
I totally understand why people ask.
It seems logical—the darker the solution, the darker the tan... right?
Not exactly.
In fact, one of the biggest secrets behind a beautiful, natural-looking spray tan has very little to do with choosing the darkest bottle on the shelf.
It has everything to do with your skin.
As a licensed esthetician and professional spray tan artist, I don't choose a solution based on what worked for your best friend or what percentage of DHA sounds the darkest. I choose it based on you—your skin tone, your undertones, your skin condition, and the result you're hoping to achieve.
Because no two people should ever receive the exact same spray tan.
Every Skin Is Different
Here's something I wish more people knew...
I can have two clients standing side by side who both tell me they want the exact same glow.
There's a good chance they won't leave with the exact same custom formula.
Why?
Because everyone's skin tells a different story.
Before I even begin your spray tan, I'm evaluating things like:
Your natural skin tone
Your skin's undertones
How hydrated your skin is
Dry patches or uneven texture
Whether you've had previous spray tans
Your lifestyle and upcoming events
Whether you're using a Rapid or Traditional solution
How dark you're hoping to go while still looking natural
That's why custom spray tanning is exactly that—custom.
Let's Talk Science (I Promise It's Interesting)
Okay... esthetician mode for just a minute because this part is actually pretty cool.
The active ingredient found in professional spray tan solutions is called DHA (Dihydroxyacetone).
Despite what many people think, DHA doesn't stain your skin.
Instead, it reacts with the amino acids found in the outermost layer of your skin called the stratum corneum.
That reaction is known as the Maillard Reaction—the exact same chemical process that browns toast or gives a perfectly seared steak its color.
As the DHA reacts with those amino acids, it forms brown pigments called melanoidins, creating the appearance of a natural tan without exposing your skin to harmful UV rays.
Since this reaction only happens in your outer layer of dead skin cells, your spray tan naturally fades as your skin exfoliates over time.
That's also why exfoliating removes a spray tan faster—you're simply shedding the skin cells that hold the developed color.
More DHA Doesn't Always Mean A Better Tan
This is probably the biggest misconception in the spray tan world.
A higher DHA percentage doesn't automatically create a prettier tan.
It simply contains more DHA available to react with your skin.
For someone with very fair skin, choosing the highest percentage possible can sometimes create a result that develops too intensely and looks less natural than intended.
Meanwhile, someone with naturally deeper skin may need an entirely different formulation to achieve their desired glow.
The goal isn't to use the darkest solution.
The goal is to choose the right solution.
Your Undertones Matter More Than You Think
When clients tell me they want to look "bronzed," everyone's version of bronze is a little different.
That's because our skin undertones are different.
Some people naturally have warm undertones.
Others have cool, olive, or neutral undertones.
Professional spray tan solutions are formulated with different cosmetic bronzers and color bases designed to complement those undertones.
Choosing the wrong base can make a tan appear too golden, too red, too green, or even orange.
Choosing the right one simply looks like healthy, glowing skin.
So... Why Do Some Spray Tans Look Orange?
This is one of the questions I hear the most.
The truth is, professional spray tans aren't supposed to look orange.
When someone ends up with an orange-looking spray tan, it's usually because of one (or more) of these reasons:
The wrong solution was chosen for their skin tone.
The tan was left on much longer than recommended.
Their skin was extremely dry or dehydrated before the appointment.
The application wasn't even.
A lower-quality solution was used.
That's exactly why choosing an experienced artist matters.
It's not just about spraying solution—it's understanding how that solution will react with your skin.
Your Skin Is Your Canvas
Think about painting a wall.
If the surface is rough, dry, or peeling, the paint isn't going to look its best.
Your skin works the same way.
Hydrated, healthy skin allows DHA to develop more evenly, fade more gracefully, and last longer.
That's why I spend just as much time educating my clients about prep and aftercare as I do choosing their custom solution.

There isn't a "one-size-fits-all" bottle that I grab for every client.
Instead, I consider your:
Natural complexion
Undertones
Skin condition
Lifestyle
Desired depth of color
Event timeline
Previous spray tan experience
Sometimes that means selecting a different color base.
Sometimes it's choosing a Rapid solution instead of a Traditional one.
Sometimes it's recommending a different rinse time rather than increasing the DHA percentage.
Those small adjustments are what create results that look effortless instead of obvious.
The Goal Was Never To Be Darker
At the end of the day, I don't want people complimenting your spray tan.
I want them to compliment you.
I want someone to say,
"You look so healthy."
"Did you just get back from vacation?"
"You're glowing."
That's when I know I've done my job.
Because the best spray tan isn't the darkest one.
