How Far Ahead Should You Get a Spray Tan Before an Event?

One of the questions I get all the time is:

“When should I actually get my spray tan?”

And the answer is usually not the night before.

For most events, I recommend getting your spray tan 1–2 days beforehand.

That gives your color time to fully develop, settle into the skin, and get through that first rinse before the event itself. Glow by Dominique

It also gives you a little breathing room, which I always prefer over trying to squeeze everything in at the last minute.

For weddings

For a wedding, I usually want your tan done about 2 days before.

That gives the color time to develop beautifully without feeling too fresh on the actual wedding day.

And if it is your wedding, I strongly recommend doing a trial beforehand.

Your wedding week should not be the first time we are figuring out your ideal depth, formula, rinse time, or undertone.

That is exactly why I created my Bridal Glow Experience — so we can figure all of that out before the day that actually matters. Glow by Dominique

For vacations

For a trip, I usually recommend scheduling your tan 1–2 days before you leave.

That gives you enough time to rinse, let your color settle, and avoid traveling while your tan is still developing.

If you are flying, driving a long distance, or heading somewhere hot and humid, I would much rather have your first rinse done before you start traveling.

Florida heat, sweat, chlorine, and humidity can all affect how a tan wears, so timing matters. Glow by Dominique

For photos, parties, dinners, and events

For most events, 1–2 days before is the sweet spot.

That works well for:

  • engagement photos

  • birthdays

  • date nights

  • family photos

  • showers

  • bachelorette weekends

  • holiday parties

  • special dinners

You want the tan to look developed and settled, not like you just stepped out of the spray tent.

Should you ever tan the day before?

Yes, absolutely.

The day before can work really well, especially with the right solution and rinse timing.

It just depends on what time your event is, what formula we are using, and whether you have enough time to complete your first rinse comfortably.

This is one of the reasons I customize appointments instead of telling every client the same thing.

What about the morning of an event?

Usually, I would not recommend it.

Your tan still needs time to develop, and you do not want to be thinking about rinse timing, loose clothing, or avoiding water when you are supposed to be getting ready.

There are always exceptions, but for something important, I would rather plan ahead.

The easiest rule to remember

If you are unsure, think:

Event Saturday? Spray Thursday or Friday.

That gives us enough time to get beautiful color without feeling rushed.

And if it is a wedding or something especially important, plan even earlier so we have time for a trial.
