Why Your Spray Tan Looks Patchy (and it’s probably not the reason you think)

I feel like one of the biggest misconceptions about spray tans is that if a tan fades patchy, the spray tan itself was “bad.”

Most of the time… it actually has nothing to do with the tan.

Your skin has EVERYTHING to do with how your spray tan develops, wears, and fades.

Honestly, your skin barrier, hydration, prep, and aftercare matter way more than people realize.

So if your tan has ever looked uneven, patchy, cracky, or faded weirdly — here’s probably why:

Your skin is dry

Dry skin grabs onto spray tan darker and lets go of it unevenly.

That’s why areas like:

  • elbows

  • knees

  • hands

  • ankles

usually fade the weirdest first.

Your spray tan develops on the top layer of your skin, so if your skin is dry or rough, the tan is going to cling there.

This is why I’m constantly talking about moisturizing and skin barrier health now. Healthy skin = better spray tans.

You still had old self tanner on

I promise you… I can tell 😭

Even when people think they got all their old tan off, there’s usually still leftover self tanner hanging on somewhere.

Then the fresh spray tan develops unevenly over it.

This is why prep matters SO much before your appointment.

You sweat during development time

This one gets almost everyone at least once.

If you:

  • workout

  • sweat

  • get caught in rain

  • wear tight clothes

  • sit outside in Florida heat for 10 minutes

before your first rinse, your tan can develop unevenly.

The first few hours after your appointment are the most important.

Your skin barrier is damaged

This is honestly something I care about a lot.

Over-exfoliating, harsh scrubs, hot showers, acne products, drying soaps… all of that damages your skin barrier.

And damaged skin does NOT hold a spray tan evenly.

Which is exactly why I’m moving more toward promoting healthy, natural glows instead of people frying their skin in the sun or tanning beds.

You should never have to damage your skin just to feel glowy.

Friction breaks spray tans down faster

Bras. Leggings. Gym clothes. Crossbody bags.

Your tan is naturally going to fade faster anywhere there’s constant rubbing.

That’s completely normal.

So how do you actually make your spray tan last?

Honestly? The answer is pretty boring lol.

  • Moisturize daily

  • Don’t over-exfoliate

  • Use gentle body wash

  • Stay hydrated

  • Avoid super hot showers

  • Protect your skin barrier

That’s really the secret.

Final thoughts

At the end of the day, a spray tan is only going to look as good as the skin underneath it.

That’s why my focus isn’t just “getting darker.”

It’s helping you maintain healthy skin while still getting that natural, glowy look without sun damage.

Because glowing skin should still be healthy skin 🤎
