Best Skin Prep Routine Before a Spray Tan for Smooth, Even Results

One of the biggest secrets to a flawless spray tan actually has nothing to do with the tan itself — it’s all about the prep beforehand.

A beautiful, natural-looking glow starts with healthy, properly prepared skin. And honestly? Proper prep is usually the difference between a smooth even tan that fades beautifully… and a patchy tan people blame on the solution.

As a licensed esthetician and mobile spray tan artist serving Wellen Park, Venice, and Sarasota, I always tell clients to think of spray tanning as part skincare, part beauty treatment. Your skin is the canvas, and the healthier and smoother the canvas is, the better your results will be.

1. Exfoliate 24 Hours Before Your Appointment

This is probably the most important step.

Exfoliating removes dead skin buildup that can cause uneven absorption, patchiness, or premature fading. Focus especially on dry areas like:

  • knees

  • elbows

  • ankles

  • hands

  • feet

I recommend avoiding oily scrubs before a spray tan since oils can leave behind residue that blocks the tanning solution from developing evenly.

Instead, use:

  • an exfoliating mitt

  • gentle body polish

  • oil-free exfoliant

And don’t forget your underarms if you regularly wear deodorant — buildup there can affect color development too.

2. Avoid Lotion, Oils, Perfume & Deodorant the Day Of

Hydrated skin is important, but too much product right before your appointment can create a barrier between your skin and the tanning solution.

On the day of your spray tan, try to arrive with:

  • clean skin

  • no lotion

  • no body oil

  • no perfume

  • no deodorant if possible

This helps the solution absorb evenly and develop naturally without spotting or discoloration.

3. Shave or Wax Ahead of Time

If you shave or wax, try to do so at least:

  • 24 hours before your appointment

Freshly shaved or waxed skin can be more sensitive, and open pores may absorb extra solution causing darker dots or uneven areas.

Giving your skin time to calm down helps create a much smoother finish overall.

4. Wear Loose, Dark Clothing After Your Appointment

Tight clothing immediately after a spray tan can rub against the developing solution and create uneven areas.

After your appointment, stick to:

  • loose clothing

  • dark fabrics

  • minimal friction

And honestly… avoid tight leggings if possible 😅

Florida humidity can already make spray tans more delicate during development, so breathable clothing really helps protect your results.

5. Moisturized Skin = Longer Lasting Glow

One of the biggest misconceptions about spray tans is that dry skin helps them last longer. It’s actually the opposite.

Healthy, hydrated skin holds a spray tan more evenly and allows it to fade much softer over time.

Once your tan has fully developed and your first rinse is complete, daily hydration becomes your best friend.

I usually recommend:

  • gentle body wash

  • fragrance-free moisturizer

  • avoiding harsh exfoliation while your tan is active

Common Mistakes That Can Ruin a Spray Tan

A few things I commonly see that can affect results:

  • applying lotion right before tanning

  • using oily body wash beforehand

  • showering too hot after your tan develops

  • wearing tight clothing immediately after your appointment

  • waiting too long to exfoliate beforehand

Most spray tan issues actually come from prep and aftercare — not the solution itself.

When Should You Get a Spray Tan Before an Event?

For weddings, vacations, photoshoots, or events, I usually recommend scheduling your spray tan:

  • 1–2 days before your event

This allows the color to fully develop, settle naturally into the skin, and photograph beautifully.

This is especially important for bridal spray tans and professional photos where skin tone and evenness matter a lot.

Healthy Skin = Better Spray Tans

Honestly, once I started focusing more on skin health as an esthetician, my entire perspective on tanning changed.

The goal of a great spray tan should never be looking orange, overly dark, or unnatural. The best tans simply make your skin look healthier, glowier, and more radiant.

When your skin is prepped properly, your tan will:

  • develop more evenly

  • last longer

  • fade softer

  • photograph beautifully

  • look much more natural overall

At the end of the day, a spray tan should enhance your skin — not cover it up.

The goal is always healthy, glowy, natural-looking skin that makes you feel confident while still looking like yourself.

And honestly? There’s something really nice about getting that bronzed Florida glow without spending hours damaging your skin in the sun ☀️🤎
